Coronavirus disease 2019<\/strong>\u00a0(COVID-19<\/strong>) is an\u00a0infectious disease<\/a>\u00a0caused by\u00a0severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2<\/a>\u00a0(SARS-CoV-2).[9]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It was first identified in December 2019 in\u00a0Wuhan<\/a>, the capital of China\u2019s\u00a0Hubei<\/a>\u00a0province, and has since spread globally, resulting in\u00a0an ongoing pandemic<\/a>.[10]<\/a><\/sup>[11]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0As of 6 May 2020,\u00a0more than 3.66 million cases<\/a>\u00a0have been reported across 187 countries and territories, resulting in\u00a0more than 257,000 deaths<\/a>. More than 1.19 million people have recovered.[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Common symptoms include\u00a0fever<\/a>,\u00a0cough<\/a>,\u00a0fatigue<\/a>,\u00a0shortness of breath<\/a>, and\u00a0loss of smell<\/a>\u00a0and taste.[5]<\/a><\/sup>[12]<\/a><\/sup>[13]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0While the majority of cases result in mild symptoms, some progress to viral\u00a0pneumonia<\/a>,\u00a0multi-organ failure<\/a>, or\u00a0cytokine storm<\/a>.[10]<\/a><\/sup>[14]<\/a><\/sup>[15]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The\u00a0time from exposure to onset of symptoms<\/a>\u00a0is typically around five days but may range from two to fourteen days.[5]<\/a><\/sup>[16]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The virus is primarily\u00a0spread<\/a>\u00a0between people during close contact,[a]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0often via\u00a0small droplets<\/a>\u00a0produced by coughing,[b]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0sneezing, and talking.[6]<\/a><\/sup>[17]<\/a><\/sup>[19]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The droplets usually fall to the ground or onto surfaces rather than\u00a0remaining in the air<\/a>\u00a0over long distances.[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0People may also become infected by touching a contaminated surface and then touching their face.[6]<\/a><\/sup>[17]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0On surfaces, the amount of virus declines over time until it is insufficient to remain infectious, but it may be detected for hours or days.[6]<\/a><\/sup>[19]<\/a><\/sup>[20]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It is most contagious during the first three days after the onset of symptoms, although spread may be possible before symptoms appear and in later stages of the disease.[21]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The standard method of\u00a0diagnosis<\/a>\u00a0is by\u00a0real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction<\/a>\u00a0(rRT-PCR) from a\u00a0nasopharyngeal swab<\/a>.[22]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Chest CT<\/a>\u00a0imaging may also be helpful for diagnosis in individuals where there is a high suspicion of infection based on symptoms and risk factors; however, guidelines do not recommend using it for routine screening.[23]<\/a><\/sup>[24]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Recommended measures to prevent infection include frequent\u00a0hand washing<\/a>,\u00a0maintaining physical distance from others<\/a>\u00a0(especially from those with symptoms),\u00a0quarantine<\/a>, covering coughs, and keeping unwashed hands away from the face.[25]<\/a><\/sup>[26]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In addition, the use of a face covering is recommended for those who suspect they have the virus and their caregivers.[27]<\/a><\/sup>[28]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Recommendations for face covering use by the general public vary, with some authorities recommending, some recommending against, and others requiring their use.[28]<\/a><\/sup>[29]<\/a><\/sup>[30]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0There is limited evidence for or against the use of masks (medical or other) in healthy individuals in the wider community.[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

According to the World Health Organization, there are no available\u00a0vaccines<\/a>\u00a0nor\u00a0specific<\/a>\u00a0antiviral treatments<\/a>\u00a0for COVID-19.[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0On 1 May 2020, the United States gave\u00a0Emergency Use Authorization<\/a>\u00a0to the antiviral\u00a0remdesivir<\/a>\u00a0for people hospitalized with severe COVID-19.[31]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Management involves the\u00a0treatment of symptoms<\/a>,\u00a0supportive care<\/a>,\u00a0isolation<\/a>, and\u00a0experimental measures<\/a>.[32]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The\u00a0World Health Organization<\/a>\u00a0(WHO) declared the COVID-19\u00a0outbreak<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0Public Health Emergency of International Concern<\/a>\u00a0(PHEIC)[33]<\/a><\/sup>[34]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0on 30 January 2020 and a\u00a0pandemic<\/a>\u00a0on 11 March 2020.[11]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Local transmission<\/a>\u00a0of the disease has occurred in most countries across all six\u00a0WHO regions<\/a>.[35]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t[\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
